Tanning, Self Tanning And
Hair Removal

Tanning can affect the effectiveness of some hair removal options such as laser and light-based treatment.

This includes the use of self-tanning products.

In other words, if you are considering laser or light-based hair removal treatment or if you have upcoming hair removal treatments planned, you're best to check in advance with your hair removal practitioner regarding whether or not tanning (including the use of self tanning products) could negatively affect your treatment results.

When I started having light-based hair removal treatment with an intense pulsed light system, the nurse who conducted the treatment told me that I should avoid direct and prolonged exposure to the sun (ie. avoid tanning) before and after treatment.

With the light-based hair removal treatment I was receiving, the machine is programmed to recognize my skin type so changing my skin color with tanning or the use of tanning products could reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

After receiving this treatment, it was also suggested that I avoid exposing the treated area to direct sunlight for at least several days after treatment.

Again, check with your practitioner before tanning or using self tanning products if you are planning hair removal treatment in the near future.
